Bangladesh’s security forces overnight arrested 1,308 people in a nationwide crackdown. The crackdown came under the “Operation Devil Hunt” campaign that was launched on Saturday. The interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said that the operation will continue until “all devils” are arrested and punished.
Joint forces including army troops, police and special units have arrested 274 individuals just in the first 24 hours particularly in major metropolitan areas. Authorities have particularly targeted suspects who are linked with the recent unrest including attacks on political figures and violent street demonstrations. This operation has been shaking the entire Bangladesh and intensifying the political tensions as former ruling party leaders are being arrested and investigated.

What Is ‘Operation Devil Hunt’?
Launched by the interim administration, Operation Devil Hunt is a large scale security crackdown aimed at individuals accused of destabilizing the country through violent protests, arson and attacks on political figures. A command center has been established to oversee law enforcement activities with officials warning that the crackdown will continue until all threats to national stability are neutralized.
Reason Behind the Operation:
The operation was triggered after student activists were injured in an attack on an Awami League leader’s residence near Dhaka. This unrest persisted for more than four days and also further intensified after the mobs targeted properties of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her party members. Authorities argue that the crackdown is necessary to prevent and stop further violence while some of the opposition parties are warned of rising authoritarianism.
