On February 12 2025, Shubman Gill scored 112 off 102 balls in the third ODI against England at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, becoming the youngest player in history to score his seventh ODI century and becoming the quickest player ever to touch 2500 runs. He achieved this milestone in mere 50 innings, surpassing South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who had hit this mark in 51 innings.

The 25 year old opening batsman hit 14 fours and 3 sixes during his  inning, which came in just 95 balls and was pivotal in putting India into a commanding total. His build-up during the innings helped India recover after an early setback with captain Rohit Sharma getting dismissed for just one run. Gill’s partnership with Virat Kohli 52 off 57 balls played a notable role in taking the innings to even keel. The two pushed India ahead slowly and steadily, with Gill playing some fine strokes to put India in a good position.

Apart from his ODI century, Gill’s innings also marked another benchmark. He became the fastest man to score 5000 international runs, one among many other examples to put the spotlight on his sheer consistency and incremental rise in the game.

Before turning 26, Gill also became the seventh player after Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag to hit seven ODI centuries at such an early age. This ton only suits Gill, as he had already made an impression as one of the most exciting talents in international cricket.

He was dismissed from the 35th over, caught behind by Phil Salt off Adil Rashid, contributing significantly with the bat in setting India a good score in this competition.
