Shab-e-Barat, also called ‘The Night of Fortune’, is one of the very important nights of the Islamic calendar. It is celebrated on the fifteenth night of Sha’ban, the eighth month of the Islamic lunar year. Though the death of Shab-e-Barat goes beyond geographical borders, this night is supposed to be the date when Allah decides everything for an individual one’s doom and what happens in the coming year. This day is believed to hold great religious significance for Muslims across worldwide. Shab-e-Barat in the year 2025 will start on the evening of February 13 and end on the evening of February 14.

On this night, many Muslims practice worship in the form of voluntary prayers (Nafl Salah), recitation of the Quran, and supplications (duas) for themselves, their families, their friends, their relatives and the deceased. They visit cemeteries where everyone prays for the dead and lays flowers and lights candles as a mark of respect.

On Shab-e-Barat, performing charity is highly encouraged and it is considered a great boon to distribute food, clothes, and money to the poor. It includes the preparation of special sweets to be distributed among family and friends and in the neighborhood.

Shab-e-Barat, in particular among nations like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Turkey, is subjected to a special fervor, with Muslims taking part in collective prayers, dhikr for the remembrance of Allah and charities.
