The latest official data available for literacy rate in Bangladesh is 75.6% in 2023 as of March 2025 reflecting a significant progress over the last year. However, it also indicates that the country has a long way to go to achieve universal literacy.
The government has undertaken a variety of projects since 1991 and entrepreneurs have invested more than Tk 4,232 crore combating illiteracy.
While children remain largely unaffected, around one in every four adults are still illiterate. Educationists believe that the government should adopt a more holistic approach, increasing its non-formal adult education and making addressing poverty related barriers central to achieving the goal of 100% literacy by 2030.
The official count for 2024 has not yet been released. Therefore, the final literacy number for Bangladesh in 2025 is unknown at the time of writing this article.
