A birth certificate is an important legal document used for obtaining passports applying for a National ID (NID) and many more official purposes. Mistakes in spelling of names, the date of birth or parental information can make the process difficult.
Thankfully, citizens in Bangladesh can now make updates to birth certificates through the online Birth and Death Registration Information System (BDRIS). With BDRIS citizens can correct errors, add names in English and Bangla and update parental information.
A birth certificate can only be updated up to seven times so applicants should ensure their details are correct. The online application process requires documentation including passports, NID and proof of birth place.
The fee is BDT 50/- and the applicant must visit their local Councillor’s office for confirmation of any details. Additional delays in the application and process may arise due to technical issues with the software used so all applicants are encouraged to track applications online.
Step-by-Step Guide to Updating Your Birth Certificate Online:
- Go to BDRIS and select ‘Apply for Birth Record Correction.’
- Provide your birth certificate number and birth date.
- Submit proof of identity and required files (max 100KB each).
- Enter the received OTP and print the application.
- Submit at the Councillor’s office by providing printed documents and pay BDT 50/-.
- Monitor online and collect the corrected certificate once approved.
