Metro operations in Dhaka resumed near full schedule this morning after a short strike by metro rail workers. The strike started early today after reports that some MRT police officers had assaulted a group of metro rail employees. The incident took place when the metro police allegedly stopped the employees for failing to use their metro passes while using the service.
Even in the face of the strike, metro trains ran according to schedule, though at two stations Secretariat and Mirpur 10 passengers could travel without scanning their metro passes. No staff members were found at these stations to inspect tickets and the gates were open at about 8:30 AM. Ansar officials were spotted guarding the entrances but did not hinder passengers.
By 8:45 AM, a staff person had confirmed the work stoppage was canceled following assurances by the higher authorities that appropriate action would be taken against the responsible police officers. Operations had returned to 95 percent normal by 9:00 AM, said DMTCL Managing Director Faruque Ahmed, with full service in sight soon.
The authorities have already initiated action against the police officials responsible for the act with further inquiries ongoing. Metro operations are once again at their normal schedule and commuters can expect normal operations.
