On February 18th 2025, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology became the center of unrest as clashes erupted between the two student bodies over a different opinion on student politics at the university.
The disturbance started with one group of students staging a procession demanding a complete ban on student political activities at KUET. “There is no place for student politics at KUET,” they shouted while marching around the university hostels with the hope of obtaining a political-free academic atmosphere.
Incidents happened near the central mosque where a group supporting the Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student faction of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party opposed demonstrations. This resulted in some violent altercations with reports indicating at least 30 injuries resulting from the clashes.
Students who support a ban say political activities distract from academic pursuit and disrupt the calm of campus life. Conversely, others regard student politics as the way to breed leadership and address student issues. This ideological facet has earlier brought antagonism whereby student political activities have been suspended in KUET since 5th August 2024.
The mood on the campus is charged following the outbreak of violence. The authorities have beefed up security to prevent further clashes and local police are patrolling the campus area to maintain temporary peace at the moment.
