The Bangladesh government has declared holidays of longer duration for its employees on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, giving them six consecutive days off. The official two day Eid break has been announced between March 29 to April 2 and March 31 is probably going to be Eid day subject to moon sighting. The holiday consists of two pre-Eid days and two post-Eid days as declared in an executive order.
Also, March 28 is Shab-e-Qadr, a public holiday and it occurs on a Friday while March 26 is Independence Day, a public holiday. As a result, March 27 will be the sole working day prior to the prolonged Eid holiday. Offices will be reopened on April 3 but since there is a weekend on April 4 and 5, government offices will be open only for two days March 27 and April 3 during the period from March 26 to April 5. Thus, the employees can get a special 11 day holiday with fewer working days.
A Cabinet Division source said the Ministry of Public Administration is thinking of tabling a summary for holiday extension at the next Advisory Council meeting. If approved workers may get a nine day holiday from March 28 to April 5.
In order to facilitate Eid travel, the extended break is convenient, particularly for people traveling back to their hometowns.
