The Bangladeshi celebrations for this Eid-ul-Fitr would be considerably different as for the public, Bangladesh Bank has suspended the exchange of fresh banknotes. In a directive released on Sunday, all scheduled banks were instructed to refrain from exchanging crisp brand-new notes and all cash transactions should be completed using re-circulated notes. This move will certainly put a stop to the Eid salami where each individual cherishes moments of receiving new currency notes along with blessings as a part of Eid celebration.

According to Arif Hossain Khan, a spokesman for Bangladesh Bank, fresh banknotes with new designs would not be available until April to May as the existing notes were being discontinued from printing. This came against a long-standing convention whereby notes traditionally conveyed governmental priorities as well as a national narrative. The pause is due to the issue of not being able to issue new banknotes without Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait in the design.

This sudden twist to the story undervalues a cherished Eid ritual which doesn’t go well with public reaction and also ignites a debate on the symbolism and legacy embedded in designs of Bangladesh currency notes. Amidst these circumstances, this Eid-Ul-Fitr will be carried out with the same old cash notes spanning through past traditions of Eid, though fresh banknotes have been suspended till the time of the Eid.
