The beginning of Ramadan brings soaring prices tagged by grocers that in turn brings in hardship for consumers to buy essential food items in Dhaka. Popular vegetables, namely aubergine, cucumber and lemons are priced at a record high.
Aubergine has gone up from Tk60-80 to Tk 100-120. Cucumber prices now hover at Tk 90-110. Kagzi lemon has risen substantially from Tk 20-40 to Tk 80-90 per 4 pieces.

The prices of fruits have zoomed as well with oranges priced at Tk 280-300 per kg and apples at Tk 300-320 per kg. Green coconut prices begin at Tk 120-180 per piece. The prices of lentils and chickpeas have also gone up with small-grain lentils now fetching Tk 140 per kg and local chickpeas Tk 130-140 per kg.
The meat and fish market has also followed the price raise. Beef currently costs Tk 800 per kg, the price of broiler chicken is Tk 200 per kg. Rui fish is trading at Tk 320-340 per kg and prawns have surged to Tk 800-1,200 per kg.
While vendors claim prices may stabilize, consumers are asking for stricter market monitoring to curb further inflation and ensure fair pricing to be charged during Ramadan.
