Japan has pledged $3.2 million to assist the flood affected communities in Bangladesh through its partnership with the International Organization for Migration. The project intends to help 500,000 displaced people in Noakhali, Lakshmipur and Feni by supporting evacuation shelters, restoring livelihoods and disaster resilience.

The agreement was signed by Saida Shinichi who is Japan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh and Lance Bonneau, IOM Bangladesh’s Chief of Mission. On the part of the Japanese, Ambassador SAIDA reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to long-term recovery efforts emphasizing the importance of sustainable solutions for displaced populations while Bonneau highlighted IOM’s role in reinforcement of shelters and training local committees for better disaster response.

This funding will only serve as an addition to Japan’s ongoing efforts. UNHCR & UNICEF provided $1 million dollars in aid and $2 million in emergency humanitarian assistance via the Japan Platform. Additionally, Japanese business associations in Dhaka provided Tk 200,000 to the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society.
