As Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching, the entire country will have a longer holiday. Government declared a five-day break but due to the added holidays of Independence Day and Shab-e-Qadr, plus the weekends, the total holiday will reach a period of nine holidays over the next period of eleven days.

The holidays that occur for Eid can be broadly categorized into three different designations as general holidays, holidays of executive order and optional holidays. The general holidays are holidays observed nationwide and are meant to apply to everyone such as all three days that follow Eid-ul-Fitr, the Eid-ul-Adha and Independence Day. 

The holidays of executive order are holidays authorized by the government and the more relevant category is holidays granted to public sector employees of the government such as the extra days granted on before and after Eid. The optional holidays are holidays granted upon permission requested by the employee and to a maximum of three days.

Who Gets These Holidays?

General holidays pertain to both government and private sector workers. Holidays by executive order are primarily for government officials, statutory bodies and semi-autonomous agencies – they do not apply to private business. Optional holidays are for employees on the basis of their faith with specific festival days listed annually for Muslims, Hindus, Christians and Buddhists.

While private companies set their own leave policies, most align with government holiday schedules during Eid. Essential services like banks and critical infrastructure may have separate holiday arrangements based on public necessity.
