England cricketer Harry Brook has been given a two year suspension from the Indian Premier League (IPL) for withdrawing from the 2025 season, although he was picked by Delhi Capitals during the auction. This is his second straight season of withdrawal, after choosing to opt out of the 2024 season due to his grandmother’s death.
According to the IPL’s rules, foreign players who pull out of the tournament after being picked in the auction are banned for two years unless the reason is injury. A BCCI official confirmed that the rule was implemented and that Brook would be banned from playing in both the 2025 and 2026 seasons of the IPL. This move goes in line with the policy set by the IPL governing body that any player who withdraws after being selected during the auction will be suspended for two seasons.
Brook announced his decision on social media, apologizing to Delhi Capitals and their fans. He cited that his attention to his England career, particularly with the upcoming home Test series against India and the Ashes later in the year, compelled him to focus on rest and preparation. He understood that some may not approve his decision but stated that representing his country is still his top priority.
The 26 year old, purchased by Delhi Capitals for ₹6.25 crore, now suffers a huge setback since he will be unable to play in the IPL until 2027.
