Bangladesh’s Satellite Name Change, Bangladesh Satellite-1

Bangladesh’s first and only wholly-owned satellite has officially been renamed from Bangabandhu Satellite-1 to Bangladesh Satellite-1. The government issued a notification on Monday confirming the change.

Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam stated that “The proposal to rename Bangabandhu Satellite-1 (BS-1) to Bangladesh Satellite-1 (BS-1) has been approved by the chief adviser. Therefore, you are requested to take the necessary subsequent actions accordingly.”

The order to rename the satellite comes from the directive of the interim government wanting to erase what they see as unjustifiable links with the Sheikh family. Earlier, the advisory council met on the move and made a case for a more neutral designation for the country’s flagship space project. Even after the name change to Bangladesh Satellite-1, it would continue with its operation to celebrate the nation’s advancement in space technology.
