In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook the waters of the Bay of Bengal sending tremors felt in eastern India and Bangladesh. Reports further indicate the earthquake was felt around 6:40 AM in Dhaka and several regions of Bangladesh as per the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

However, since the epicenter was situated underwater off the shore of West Bengal and Odisha, its impact in Bangladesh itself was quite minimal. Seismic reports indicate the epicenter was 501 kilometers from Bangladesh, 91 kilometers deep. The coastal regions of India including Kolkata, Howrah and Odisha reportedly rattled more. While there was mild to moderate shaking felt in different areas, it has not yielded major reports of casualties or structural damage.

India’s National Centre for Seismology confirmed that the epicenter was about 220 kilometers from Paradip in Odisha. Residents around Dhaka felt weak tremors and also local authorities monitor the situation and for now, there is no major damage done.
